How To install and configure Clam AntiVirus (clamav) for Linux

Download the latest stable release of clamav from clamav.net

As of this writing, the steps I ran to get a working clamav were:

  923  wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/clamav/clamav-0.97.6.tar.gz
  927  tar zxvf clamav-0.97.6.tar.gz
  928  cd clamav-0.97.6
  941  groupadd clamav
  943  useradd -g clamav -s /bin/false -c "Clam AntiVirus" clamav
  944  ./configure
  945  make
  950  make install
  951  clamd
  952  vi /usr/local/etc/clamd.conf
  953  paste in
clam config file
  969  vi /usr/local/etc/freshclam.conf
  970  paste in
freshclam config file
  971  mkdir /usr/local/share/clamav
  980  chown clamav:clamav /usr/local/share/clamav
  988  freshclam
  989  clamscan -r -l scan.txt /var/www/vhosts/
